Glimmers

This week was challenging in the Midwest. The area I grew up in was slammed by thunderstorms, tornadoes struck the area, people lost power, trees were downed, life was interrupted. In the midst of these very hard and difficult times, even as hard as it is, I can look around and search for glimmers, as well as check on those around us who are having trouble.

For me this week —

I got a new red coffee cup from the Dollar Tree that says All you need is love and coffee.

I saw The End of Oak Street with new friends I met through a movie group.

I enjoyed a slower work week preparing for the school year, because the students are not back yet.

I went to a new old coffee shop, meaning it was refurbished.

I found a great new book at the library.

My wife and I went to Lore on National Book Lovers Day, then over to Harun Coffee, which has a speakeasy on the side, then purchased some Jamaican meat pies.

I got to take my son to school for the first days of his senior year.

Are there things I am worried about? Yes — money, politics, the upcoming school year, applying for colleges, bills, debt, unsolved problems, and problems that are waiting for me. But right alongside all of these are the glimmers, that which is going well, or has gone well, that I can point to.
