Glimmers
When we look at the night sky, we see different phases of the moon. When we see a crescent moon, the moon hasn't physically changed its shape or size. As it orbits Earth, our view of its sunlit half changes. The whole moon is still there, even when we can only see a sliver.
I think the same thing happens with our glimmers.
Our problems seem to stay right in front of us. At least for me, I see them every day. But our glimmers still happen. The things that went well, the things we enjoyed—they're still there. Sometimes it just takes a little more effort to remember them and feel the joy they brought us.
That's why, every Friday, I look back and search for my glimmers.
This week, a whole heck of a lot of things went wrong. There were plenty of problems. But we'll put those to the side for now and look for the glimmers.
Glimmer number one: I got to see the Bears win on Monday Night Football, and Case Keenum had a tremendous game.
The second glimmer was getting to try the new Aerocano at Starbucks.
Another glimmer is looking forward to staying in a hotel while our bathroom is being fixed. I'm also grateful that I can work from home and be in the apartment while the work is being done. I'm thankful to have employers who are considerate of the situations we may encounter.
I'm thankful for the weather cooling down and the morning walks I get to take with my dog.
And I'm grateful for my Keurig and a K-cup of coffee every morning. Sometimes, a glimmer is that simple.
These are all positive things that happened this week, or things I get to look forward to. They don't erase the problems, but they give me something else to remember.
So when you're tempted to keep recycling what was unfortunate or challenging, remember your glimmers. Remember the things that went well.
Like the whole moon behind that crescent, there's more there than you can see at first.
What part of your week are you only seeing a sliver of?
Here, I made this. My gift to you, for taking the time to read.
