The path forward

One of the more challenging things about making a mistake is getting advice that centers on why you made it.

Well, I already made it. I can't undo it. I can't go back in time. What I need to know now is: What do I do moving forward?

For example, say I let my password expire and get locked out of an account. I contact tech support, and the first thing someone tells me is, "You shouldn't have let your password expire."

Yes. We agree. That would have been helpful before it expired.

I didn't want to get locked out. I missed the reminder. I was busy. Something that needed my attention didn't get it. Now the password has expired, and I'm staring at a screen I can't get past.

So, where do we go from here?

Maybe some of my frustration comes from being upset with myself. I already know I made a mistake, so hearing someone point it out again hits a tender spot. I'm bringing my own criticism into the conversation before the other person even speaks.

Still, I need help getting back into the account.

There's value in understanding what happened. Sometimes we need to look back long enough to recognize a pattern, set a reminder, or make a different plan. I want to learn from my mistakes. I hope that learning helps me avoid making the same ones again.

Of course, some lessons stick. Others apparently require several more appointments with the consequences.

We repeat things we thought we had learned. We get busy again. We forget again. We find ourselves thinking, Haven't I already been through this?

Usually, that wasn't the intention. I don't wake up hoping to create another problem for myself. There are already enough things on the calendar.

But intentions don't erase consequences. The account is still locked. Whatever I missed still needs attention. And I have to deal with what happened, even while I'm frustrated that I let it happen.

I think that's where I need a little grace—from other people and from myself. Enough room to admit the mistake, work through the consequences, and figure out what might help next time.

I can look back and learn something. But the path forward is still forward.

And right now, I could really use a password reset.

Whose voice do you hear first when you make a mistake?

Here, I made this. My gift to you, for taking the time to read.
