Musical connections

It’s Saturday afternoon. I’m sipping an iced Americano, eating a brownie, when an Alanis Morissette song starts playing in the cafe.

Suddenly I’m back in DeKalb, Illinois. Northern Illinois University. College.

And it strikes me: this is what music does.

Music connects us to memories, experiences, relationships. Past and present.

It’s a good reason to listen to old songs—to reconnect with past joy and rediscover gratitude. But it’s also a quiet conviction to keep seeking new music. New connections. Future joy.

What song instantly transports you to another time in your life—and what does that memory still teach you today?
