Friday Eve

At work, we like to call Thursday "Friday Eve." And today isn't just Friday Eve. It's payday.

A double celebration. Sort of.

Payday hits differently as an adult. When I was in high school and got paid, it was, "Woohoo!" We'd run out, buy stuff, go to restaurants, and be broke by Monday. There wasn't much financial planning involved, but there was excitement.

Now payday comes, and it's, "Okay, we got paid."

Then, whoosh. Out goes the money to bills.

At least there's autopay. We don't have to write checks, put them in envelopes, find stamps, or go somewhere to pay a bill. The money just quietly leaves. Almost like you're not even losing it.

Almost.

You still know it's gone. You still have to budget. And yes, you can still go out and buy things, but the excitement doesn't quite match getting that paycheck from your first job. These days, some of my money has places to be before it even arrives.

But it's also Friday Eve.

What does "eve" mean? It means we're anticipating something. Not Eve from the Bible and that whole situation with the snake. I mean eve as in Christmas Eve. We're excited because Christmas is coming.

At work, we get a little version of that every week. Thursday arrives, and we know Friday is coming. There's something to look forward to, even with a full day of work still ahead of us.

Calling it Friday Eve doesn't make Thursday any shorter, but I like the sound of it. It gives an ordinary day a little occasion.

And today, that occasion comes with a paycheck.

Sure, the bills are excited too. But they don't get to have all the fun.

If you were asked to create a Friday Eve ritual, what would it include?

Here, I made this. My gift to you, for taking the time to read.
