Dr. Thompson

It has been a while since I posted, but that was by design. I was finishing my doctorate degree, and I’m proud to share that I recently earned a Doctorate in Special Education. It was a three-year journey that is finally complete.

Even though I felt anxious, I intentionally planned activities to make the day memorable. In the morning, I dropped off my son. Then I visited a new coffee shop and enjoyed an Americano. Next, I headed to a bookstore and picked up a new book. After that, I made my way to the room I had reserved at the local library to do my virtual defense.

Blasting “N.I.B.” by Black Sabbath in the car, I looked up to see a man outside playing air guitar—an unexpected but amusing moment. Before heading in, I played one more song: “Ghetto Life” by Rick James—no idea why that one came to mind. After the defense concluded and I was officially Dr. Thompson, I celebrated by playing “Victory Lap” by Nipsey Hussle.

Coffee, books, and music—three things I love—helped transform a high-stress event into something meaningful and enjoyable.

Sometimes the best way to face a challenge is to intentionally add joy to it. Even in moments of stress, we can create memories worth keeping.

Reflection Question:

What are three things you enjoy that you could incorporate into your next big challenge to make it more meaningful or fun?
