Book Selection
I’ve heard a lot of writing advice: “the cover is everything,” so chase the perfect cover. Then someone else says it’s all about the perfect title. Or—get reviews and hit up everyone you know to leave one.
I’m a voracious reader, but I don’t choose books by covers. Titles are interesting, and reviews can help, but I also know many reviews get requested before people even read the book.
I pick books based on subject matter. And I’m a bit of a rebel: I don’t ask people to leave me a five-star review. I’d rather you read it and—even if you think it stinks—say so honestly than feel pressured to post a review. Flashy titles, though? Guilty as charged. My first book is Aquafunkapus and the Macrocosm of Mayhem, and my second is Up the Nose and Back Out Again: Fall in Love, Save the World.

Question for you: When you choose your next read, what carries the most weight—cover, title, reviews, or subject—and why?
